Environmental News You Can Use Since 2003

San Clemente, CA | August 26, 2008
Coastal Wildlife & Habitat at Risk

Act now to protect the Endangered Species Act. The Bush Administration has proposed stripping the current protections of endangered species on the coast and elsewhere. Surfrider Foundation members, we are committed to preserving the natural biodiversity and ecological integrity of the coastal environment. In the past, Surfrider has fought to protect the hawksbill sea turtle, leatherback sea turtle, elkhorn coral, steelhead trout, snowy plover, marine otter and other coastal wildlife, using the Endangered Species Act (ESA) as a basis for these environmental battles. The proposed amendments would strip away these legal protections that the Surfrider Foundation relies on to protect and maintain healthy marine ecosystems.

If the Bush Administration is successful in compromising the ESA, how susceptible are other environmental laws such as the Federal Clean Air and Clean Water Acts? These acts provide Surfrider Foundation and other environmental organizations the framework from which to fight our national battles. As such, the integrity of these laws need to be preserved. Moreover, the administration is trying to push these rule amendments through in an abbreviated 30 day comment period. Act now to tell the Bush Administration and the current presidential candidates how you feel about these proposed rule changes that would undermine the nation's environmental protections.

"Art Globes spin green edu-tainment & strong message about global warming."

Props go to Chicago marketing whiz Wendy Abrams who came up with the idea of "Cool Globes" public art project which showcases solutions to the climate crisis. Currently, 37 of the colorful, eye-catching globes are on display at Chrissy Field in San Francisco now until October 12th. Here's some of PlanetCheck's favorites from the exhibit. Residential Recycling

Support your neighborhood recycling center! Recycling conserves resources and cuts down on energy use. The energy conserved by recycling in the U.S. is enough to power nine million households annually. Recycling one glass jar saves as much energy as it takes to light a 100-watt bulb for 4 hours. Recycling saves resources as well. If Americans recycled just one tenth of their newspapers, we would save 25 million trees a year. How full is your recycling bins?

Post Outside Lands Concert
SF, Calif.
8/26/2008

Just coming up for air after 3 days in Golden Gate Park which was originally Called "Outside Lands." I was impressed to see how far we've come as a culture in greening concerts of this magnitude. There were several festival-wide initiatives that helped reduce our carbon footprint on Mother Earth. Cups, plates & cutlery were all compostable. A brand new company called Clean Vibes was in charge of bins labeled: Compost, Recycle, Landfill. It still bothers me the mountain of plastic water bottles.
